How do we distinguish “new media” from “old” media? List and explain several ways to do this.
New media can be distinguish from old media in that new media is more accessible, it is faster, it is updated frequently and users of new media can participate in the development of content.

Accessibility

New media is more accessible because we can obtain it by using our computers or mobile phones. At anytime, 24/7, anywhere in the world.

Faster
Just by doing a couple of clicks and in less than 5 seconds we are bombarded by pages of information containing information such as news, articles, videos etc... We don't have to wait for the next day to get the newspaper.

Participation
Online newspapers and blogs from journalists world wide are available to ordinary users. And users can post comments, opinions and ask questions to the writers who respond back. User interaction is something that distinguishes new media from old media

This is a great breakdown of what what makes something old or new media. For me the two most important criteria are accessibility and faster. If you can't get to something and get there quickly online you are going to stop trying or find a new way.
